Lantern Brother

We were never the same kind of light.

You arrived laughing —

open hands, open heart,

a warmth that stepped into rooms before your name ever did.

I learned to stand beside you quietly,

not dimming you,

not trying to shine louder,

just steady.

For years I thought that meant

I was less visible,

less bright —

a shadow walking next to the sun.

But now I see

a shadow only exists

because there is something solid in the path of the light,

and sometimes it is the one

who stands still long enough

to hold the light steady.

You moved like fire —

quick joy, quick mercy,

a spirit that touched people

before they understood why.

I moved like stone —

watching, listening,

learning how to carry weight

without letting it crush us.

I did not know then

that quiet can also be a kindness,

that stillness can be a shelter,

that a brother can be a lantern

without ever realizing he is lit.

We met the same people,

walked the same roads,

but they saw us differently —

you the radiance,

me the calm beside it.

And maybe that was always enough.

Because you never asked me

to shine brighter.

You only needed me near.

Now I look back

and the ache has softened into peace.

Not because I miss you less,

but because I understand more.

I was not the absence of light.

I was the place

where your light could rest.

And even now,

when memory comes like evening,

I feel it —

two brothers,

different flames,

one warmth.

And I know this:

Love does not disappear when one light goes out.

It learns new ways to glow.
