Love Comes Full Circle

Before you remember

what I have forgotten,

remember who I have been.

There may come a day

when I cannot remember your voice, or the stories we once laughed about.

There may come a day

when I ask the same question

for the fifth time,

or mistake yesterday for fifty years ago.

If that day comes,

please don't measure my love

by what my mind can no longer recall.

Measure it

by the years that came before.

Remember that the hands

you now steady,

once steadied yours.

The voice you patiently answer,

once whispered you to sleep.

The arms

that now need your strength,

once carried you.

And if I become frustrated,

or frightened,

or seem like someone

you no longer recognize,

remember that somewhere

inside, I am still trying.

If I forget your name,

I have not forgotten your worth.

If I cannot find the words,

love has not left me.

Only language has.

And if I can no longer tell you

that I love you,

let your memory

carry what mine no longer can.

Love me

the way I loved you—

not because I remember,

but because you do.

And if the time ever comes when I can't recall your name.

Please remember that I really want to.

And that I am still here.

Even when I cannot show you, the way I once did.
